LITERATURE STUDY

CORE LITERATURE STUDY

Additional literature study guidelines:

• Ten core literature study titles to be read in each grade.

• Four to five literature study titles to be read together as an author or genre study.

• Benchmarked comprehension literature study questions published by the district are carefully and consistently used to guide student comprehension.

• Little or no oral reading by literature study students except as volunteers in short passages that have been previously rehearsed, or as part of dialogue reading.

• Oral reading should feel like a performance! Families/community should be regularly invited to join children as listeners and/or readers.

• Some students with stronger oral reading (performance) skills may get to read more as the year goes on, others will not engage in oral reading at all throughout the year (depending on skills).

• Films, videotapes and audio tapes, as well as dramatic reading by the teacher and invited guests, are used to enhance instruction.

• Student responses to literature, in the form of variety of projects & performances, are widely displayed, praised, discussed and shared throughout the school.

• Core literature study titles available in Spanish in the library are publicized in the form of lists and are made available to students and student families.

• Students in literature study classes, especially the beginners, are encouraged to explore core titles independently at home in Spanish. Ideally, they should pre-read these titles before they are read as core titles in school.

• Individual reading logs, maintained by each student through the year, are designed to help students integrate the core literature study and the independent reading program components. They also serve as a basis for self-assessment and teacher assessment.

• Literature study teachers use reading logs for assessment purposes, and to share with families.
