Requirements
To enter a nursing school you need to have a high school diploma and a sound academic standing in high school English, algebra, biology, chemistry, physics and psychology. Another asset to enter which will be helpful is an understanding of computers and technology. Some schools require the National League for Nursing (NLN) Pre-admission exam.
When choosing a nursing school it is important to ask if the school you want to attend is accredited by the National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission (NLNAC). This commission for is recognized by the U.S. Department of Education as the national accrediting body for all types of nursing school programs. If your school is accredited, you will have a better chance of earning a license, and of being admitted to a four-year nursing school or graduated nursing school program later in your nursing career.
University
At a university you can choose the nursing school program which is appropriate to you. The nursing school offers programs which take traditionally about 3 to 4 years. The nursing school programs which can be offered by universities are the bachelor’s degree, master’s degree, doctorate degree and the associate degree.
Non-University
• Online Programs
There are a number of possibilities to study nursing joining online nursing schools. Often registered nurses have the most advantage in these types of schools because they already have some clinical experience. Entry level students can join this nursing school too, although they will have a hard time completing a degree program of a nursing school online because of this lack of clinical experience. The advantages of attending an online nursing school is that you will be able to gain entry with a degree level qualification and you will continue that education during your career.
• Distance / Blended Learning
Next to online nursing schools there are also opportunities to distance/blended learning. The difference with an online school is that distance learning can involve books, audio, CD-ROMS, video, multimedia communications, or some combination of these with other traditional delivery methods.
