History of Austin Community College
Austin Community College was founded in 1973 as part of the Austin Independent School District. Today, the college functions as an independent institution and operates six campuses throughout Greater Austin as well as 40 other locations in Austin Community College‘s service area. Set and periodically revised by the state Legislature, Austin Community College’s service
area encompasses all of the following counties: Travis, Hays, Bastrop, Caldwell, Blanco, Gillespie, and parts of both Gonzales and Williamson Counties. The Austin Community College District, composed of areas that support the college’s operations through an ad valorem tax, include the Austin, Del Valle, Leander, and Manor independent school districts.

Each year more than 65,000 credit and non-credit students take advantage of Austin Community College’s low tuition, small classes, convenient locations, and great instructors. Fall semester 2004 credit enrollment was 29,004

Associate of Arts and Associate of Science degrees in over 30 university transfer majors; Associate of Applied Science degrees and certificates in over 50 technical fields
Special Academic Programs
Honors Program for academically talented and motivated students; Service Learning, classes that provide both classroom instruction and outside volunteer opportunities; Early College Start, to allow high school students to enroll in college-level courses before completing high school; Tech-Prep, to allow high school students to complete technical courses that will be credited toward an Austin Community College degree after high school graduation
