The money from the lender is received through your educational institution in several instalments (minimum is two). No instalment can be higher than 50 % of the loan’s total. This applies to both direct federal loans and FFEL.

The loan money will be used to pay for your tuition and study expenses plus accommodation and meals. Any funds remaining after those expenses have been paid, you can collect in cash or in a cheque.

If you’re a first-year student and/or this is your first loan, the educational institution can’t proceed to pay for your expenses (tuition, books, fees, accommodation, etc.) until 30 days after you have signed your enrolment.
