EXCHANGE STUDENT

An exchange student is a foreign student - usually high school or university student - who temporarily goes abroad and lives with a host family in a foreign country and will also attend school there. He or she will go on an international student exchange. The host family will often also sends another student of their high school or university abroad. Mostly the country will be the same country as the country of the foreign exchange student they are hosting. In this way, the two students are said to have been "exchanged," essentially temporarily trading countries with each other.

The main purpose of foreign exchange student programs is to increase cultural understanding, both for the exchange student and the people in the host country he or she comes into contact with. The exchange student will experience the differences between his or her country and the exchanging country.
