Formula Student: Designing the car of the future

Formula Student is a huge educational motorsport event that is held in Europe every year but it is not a student driver school. Run by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE), in partnership with big companies in the industry  as Shell and Mercedes-Benz, the main goal of the event is to aim university students to design and build a single seat racing car. Formula Student provides future engineers a real life experience in motor industry since they need to learn about team working, under pressure and to tight timescales. As in real jobs, students taking part in the challenge need total commitment, lots of late nights, and many frustrations and challenges along the way, but the net result is the development of highly talented young engineers. Universities from all over the world from the UK, mainland Europe and from the Americas, Asia and Australasia compete every year at Silverstone Racing Circuit. In 2010, The poll coincides with an event taking place at the IMechE in Birdcage Walk, London, this week called “Learn to Win” which will give students top tips on how to win the event and understand the appliance of science in areas such as alternative fuels. Formula Student Chief Judge said: “Learn to Win is a fantastic opportunity to enable students to learn everything they can from how to make their vehicle more sustainable to controlling budgets and how to make the best business case for their team. With judges representing organizations such as Red Bull and McLaren, these young engineers will get first hand practical advice from the experts.”
