Learning while you take a nap

Tuesday, May 4th, 2010

A new study from Harvard Medical School found that napping, and dreaming in particular, can be very effective to learn.

We know already for a long time that sleep improves performances on memory tests, but now a new study puts forward that an afternoon nap might improve the ability to process and store information. There is one remark though; you have to dream while you are sleeping.

99 college students participated in the study and were told how to navigate a complex maze on a computer. Afterwards, half of the participants were allowed to take a 90 minute nap while the other half stayed awake. Nappers did better than the students who stayed awake, but what’s more important is that the students who dreamt about the maze, performed 10 times better than the other nappers.

This does not say that you get a better memory by dreaming, it proves that when we are asleep, we try to work out the problem unconsciously. Especially when we find something difficult.

So if you think that sleeping is a waste of time, dream on!

Good Study Habits

College life is a very crucial stage of learning. It needs time and money in order to finish the degree courses. College education is in deep study of a certain field in commerce, nursing, engineering, philosophy, art, sciences, and technology. This learning level is a preparatory stage for one’s future career. The students will be equip with knowledge and skills in their chosen field of study. No wonder, that the educational set up for college students is quite harder. The concepts, principles and application are much complicated. As well, college education requires a lot of things to accomplish. Accomplishing a lot of things can sometimes lead to brain drain and stress especially if the exams fast approaching. In which, there are several things to study about. To avoid cramming and stressful preparation for the exams or other requirements, a student must develop the time management skills and good study habits.

The concept of time management skills and good studying habits was supported by Sally Dreier. Sally Dreier is the current program coordinator of the University’s Study Skills Center. According to Sally Dreier, having a good study habits and time management can avoid the occurrence of stress in one’s self. The two aspect must go along in order to come up a good result during the examination’s.

Sally Dreier, also emphasizes the importance of taking down notes and the organization of the notes that was done. According to her, taking down notes during class lessons can be useful upon studying or reviewing the past lesson in preparation for the exams. As well, organized note taking is also necessary in order to avoid confusion and easy tracking for the previous lessons.

The core of having a good study habits is to create a plan upon studying in order to make the review flow smoothly. Sally Dreier suggested some steps in order to come have a good study system for the students.

  1. Gather the notes that are covered for the upcoming exam. If there are missing notes, the students must ask their teacher or classmate for a copy.
  2. Reading and familiarizing the concepts and principle are necessary in order to recall the lessons easily.
  3. Get involve or join a study group session for referrals if there are some things that you don’t understand.
  4. Focus on reviewing the lessons.
  5. Drink a lot of water while reviewing the lesson. Water can be helpful in increasing the oxygen flow of the brain.
  6. Eat healthy foods and avoid eating junk foods and caffeine. In which, junk foods and caffeine content foods can saps the brain cells.
  7. Have lots of sleep. Your brain must need to rest as well the body in oder to function well.

These factors can be helpful in coming up a good study habit. Just to set a time for studying. It is also advisable to review the lesson daily not just for upcoming exams. Reviewing the lessons daily can obtain internalization of things. As well, it obtains easy recall of the lessons that have taken up.

How to Learn After School

Wednesday, July 25th, 2007

Education and career training is important and for this reason we all go to school. But the temporary time in school is sometimes not enough to understand the learning matter and if this once happened and if children and parents don’t make sure that this issue doesn’t get solved children will always have problems with topics that base on that one they didn’t understand. It is a vicious circle which affects the entire education and the earlier this vicious circle begins the more problems will children have in school. So it is important for both children and parents to make sure that there is a possibility to repeat and to stabilize the learning matter und and to do exercises as well. Therefore parents have a lot of options to offer their children such possibilities.

Learning with parents

Parents can easily support their children. They can help them to do their homework for example. This method is especially important during the first school years because parents are their major attachment figures. If parents do not show any interest in what the kids learn and where they have problems children feel rebutted and lose lust for learning. Therefore parents should always save some of their time for their children. Little things like reading can also be practiced in the everyday life. For example in supermarket children can read the grocery list and say what is still missed in the supermarket trolley.

Learning in groups

Another good possibility is when children band together. Then they can explain the learning matter to each other on their level which sometimes is more understandable than when an adult does it on his level. Also children learn to work in a team and develop social skills. After they solved several exercises the children should be able to explain their team the process of solution just to repeat it again. As maybe most of the children find individual solutions for exercises and bring them together the children can pick the for them self most effective solution. To make this method of learning effective these groups shouldn’t be bigger than 6 children. Also there should be a kind of supervisor (at best a teacher) who can support them if necessary.

Private lessons

Other options would be private lessons, online schools. A professional regularly repeats intensely the entire learning matter the child had in school since their last private lesson. As this is often individualised teaching the teacher can fully concentrate on the child’s issues. But a disadvantage of this method is that private lessons for have to paid. Costs per private lesson vary but there are some clubs which are specialized in private lessons and have considerable prices.

Learning material

If your child acts independently and disciplined enough it can use special learning material from the bookshop. Things like books with exercises and the solutions in the appendix could be helpful for self-studying. But this really requires a high discipline and is only appropriate for older children. With this method children learn to find solutions on their own and they can better keep the process of solution because they developed it from the beginning on their own. Further more they develop individual strategies how to deal with unknown exercises and use them in school when starting a new learning matter.
