Human Rights Group Sides Students on Corporal Punishment Issues

Sunday, August 31st, 2008
Corporal punishment is one of the problems of many schools world wide with school owners protecting their staff instead of the interest of students. This issue is already brought to courts in many countries and is still tried as of this writing.

In the United States, human rights groups also condemn this so-called corporal punishment and they are calling government officials in Washington to ban corporal punishment in the campus, citing reports the problem is still prevalent in the country. The group who called themselves American Civil Liberties Union and the Human Rights Watch in their report revealed 223,190 corporal punishments in the US, and this include a 16-year-old pregnant who is reportedly hit by the principal for being late in the class. The report also added that in 2005-2006 the figure went down to 48,838 but remains in the United States. The report said there are 21 states that allegedly allow corporal punishment inside the school campus. Canada and other 106 countries of the world reportedly banned corporal punishments according to the human rights advocates.

Alice Walker, author of the report said many educators in America cited good discipline as the best way to have good education for students aside from being a quick. She said nowadays this approaches in discipline is already problematic. Corporal punishment may include hitting a child using wooden boards, or on the rump. It may also be licks, pops or paddling. Walker said this kind of discipline on students creates chaotic and violent environment. Students when hit become angry and also do immediate reaction. Walker cited this so-called corporal punishment may halt bad behavior among students but only in the short term. In the long term, she said, it fails to teach good behavior among students why their behaviors went wrong.

The report also said Mississippi has the highest record of corporal punishment received by students, with its record of 7.5 percent. Texas has only 48,197 and records the highest number. Corporal punishment is already condemned by parents also in the US, saying that it won’t bring any good to students instead they would develop a feeling of unsafe schooling. The student career education would be badly affected if they become victims of corporal punishment.

However, this does not include students enrolling in online university degree.

A report said the number of Indian students enrolled in the UK region’s higher education has increased to as high as 24 percent last year. A data also extracted from the office of higher education in UK has it that the population of Indian students which is 19,205 in 2005-2006 has increased to 23,835 in 2006-2007. Colleges and universities in UK will be told to report students who failed to enroll in courses as well as they are also required to obtain a license if they want to recruit international students. If you are weak in English then you should give more time for English instead of those that you have excellent performance.

3. Join group study sessions – There are students who want to study when they are with their classmates. If you are this kind of person you should make it a point to join group study sessions. If you have not tried yet then you should try it. You can feel that group study sessions are more exciting than you alone studying. The interactions are a great help because you can ask questions to your peers for lessons you don’t understand in classroom discussions.

4. Take down important notes – There are important notes you should take down and these are the notes in which it can help you easily remember the topics you have studied. If you are in a boarding school the more you have more time to study your lessons. This means you have also good chances of improving your grades.

Conduct thorough selection process – As a student looking for help from lending firms you should be able to successfully identify the proper company which has the heart for the needs of students under the problem of not being able to have enough education funding. Careful selection process means selecting the best company especially if you choose private companies. While it is also advisable to make as priority government-funded loans but all these government loan companies also has some limitations such as not able to accept all applicants because of limited resources.

Consider the interest rates of the loan – This is good information you should consider so that you will not be bothered in the future during the payment period that you are paying very high interest rates just because you did not know during the applications process. It is a fact that private student loan companies have higher interest rates than the government, but there are those who also charge too much and this is the kind of companies you should avoid. There are many types of student loans in many schools worldwide but the most important to know would be about the interest rates.

Identify the capacity of lenders – There are lenders whose capacity is questionable. In fact, some came to the point of closing shop to the detriment of students under their loan program. In this case, student would be caught unaware when this type of lending firms suddenly close shop and declare bankruptcy. This means it is very important to identify the capacity of these schools as well as how many years they are in the business.

International Students in Michigan Increases Despite High Tuitions

Sunday, August 3rd, 2008
Five hundred more international students are recorded at Michigan State University (MSU) despite the much reported tuition fee increase as well as the lack of financing options for students. This means the students aiming to enroll abroad are not affected by the rising tuition costs for international students. In fact, the increase in tuition is expected in major schools world wide.

Nicole Namy, adviser for international students and scholars said this increase is really expected this year. She said this welcome development for international education program is shown to be successful as students in different countries continue to enroll overseas despite the global economic crisis. In fact, Ziying Pan paid MSU full tuition for the whole semester as she is not eligible for scholarship programs of the school as well as government grants.

It is reported that there was an increase of at least 7.1 percent in the tuition for international students per academic year and undergrad international students are included in this increase in tuition. The truth is that they are not also eligible for financial aid being enjoyed by US residents. But Pan said in order to augment her other schooling expenses she needed to work part time in the campus. Pan is taking a math major at MSU and she’s originally from China.

Val Meyers, MSU associate director for the Office of Financial said Americans students can easily apply for student loan through the FAFSA program of the US government or otherwise known as Free Application for Federal Student Aid. Unfortunately for international students they don’t have such option enjoyed by the Americans. In other cases, Meyers said, there are international students that are also financed by their home countries maybe for study purposes in other countries. “Actually, there are 38 percent last of our international students who have availed of students but the interest rates are too high just because they are not citizens of America. She said the MSU alone has more than a hundred scholarship programs but the qualifications are strictly for the Americans.

Another international student Mamud Dako from Nigeria, and who enrolled at MSU since 2005, also enjoy the full tuition paid by his family. He said Americans are very lucky they can enjoy student loans to guarantee their future. There are only few private student loan international students can qualify.

Foreign learners are very much fascinated about the good quality of educational services that most of the schools in England offer especially to the different colleges and universities. Since, most of the foreign learners who are studying in England are usually taking up their higher educational learning in college degree programs, master’s degree or even PhD level. With the increase numbers of foreign learners in the country, the England government wants to ensure that the foreign learners in the country have abided the law of the nation. By doing so, the government continually monitored the general activities of each foreign learner in order to avoid some illegal activities that might occur and to ensure that peace always reign in their nation despite that there are several foreign individuals staying in this place.

Part of the constitutional law that the England government implemented in the nation for the foreign individuals to abide is to forbid the foreign learners of taking a long absence without any valid reason in order to avoid some illegal acts that might occur. As well, the government is also requiring the different private or public schools in the country that got international learner to monitor their presences especially their absences. If they have seen any suspicious behavior acts and keeps on having a long duration of absences which exceed in ten days, the school administrator must already take an action on it through having an own investigation and report it directly to the Bureau of Foreign affairs in order to settle this kind of situation. The monitoring of foreign learners in the country is not act of invading their privacy but rather to support these foreign learners to become responsible individuals and to attain discipline upon taking their higher education program in this foreign country.

Aside of that also, this law implemented to the foreign learners also provides a dual effect for themselves and to the foreign country that there are studying. Since, the England government just want to ensure that their nations stability of peace and harmony are still be sustained despite that there are foreign individuals that stays for a quite long duration in their place.
